Southern Estonia early spring 2008 : Here are photos from early spring 2008 made in southern part of Estonia.
Estonia is small independant country located across Baltic Sea from Finland. Population is less then 1.5 million. Being located near Russia's border this country has been in the middle of battles and under multiple powers. More info could be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonia
Country where I lived first 29 years of my life welcomed me with regular cloudy, semi-cloudy and soggy weather. What I was pleased to see - harmony between new and old. New colorful supermarkets and old buildings located in same city blocks. People are same friendly as before.
I had no time to visit Tallinn. Images shown here were made in Tartu( second city by population), in Elva, places called Illi, Peedu, Mosina.

All photos are made with Minolta 7D DSLR with high quality lenses. Resolution is enough for large prints up to poster size.

KonicaMinolta 7D first week testing : Camera design is superior. Very convinient for user. Many external buttons are allowing to change almost any setting with a second.
Also Anti Shake of camera body is working very effectivelly, and I was able to get terrific results even at 300mm focal lenth without tripod in dim lighting (look at images N10,11 and 12).

Every image uploaded is original, with EXIF data visible for you.

Older 3500xi external flash doesn't work properly with this body. Overexposed images in this album are showing it.

Most cheap lens that I had in my backpak - Quantaray 28-90mm f/3.5- 5.6 is not working with this camera. Body simply dosn't see it. Giving "No Lens Attached" error.. :)

However AF Macro tubes are working fine!!!! Hurrah!

I didn’t use RAW here and not “extra fine JPG”.
All portraits with handheld camera, higher ISO, without flash (I don’t like any flash).
Kayakers made with 70-300mm Sigma DL but with AntiShake enabled.
Macros of flowers made with Minolta 50mm f/1.7 lens and Kenko extension tubes.
Night sky shots with Minolta 50mm f/1.7 and Sigma 24mm f/2.8.
Sigma 24 f/2.8 for city/ HWY long exposures.

Look at exif data of each image(under each image – mode details).
Some shots are blue or yellowish because I played with WB- Kelvin to start feeling what it does.

For my dad, Izold Pustylnik И.Б.Пустыльник , Изольд Бенционович Пустыльник : ***********************************************************************************************************
I: Dad, why we are not following rules written in Old Testament?
He: Why should I live as was written 5000+ years ago, if after this time civilization created so many great things?
************************************************************************************************************
He: Intresting, from population of 6 billions living in World, only 10,000 are pushing progress by leading scientific research.
***********************************************************************************************************
He: For adult man the is no such thing as age… (Don’t use it as an excuse)
***********************************************************************************************************
He: It was language and communication skills that made our ancestors become humans.
Transition was incredibly rapid.
***********************************************************************************************************

This album is dedicated for my father who passed away on 05/02/08.
Izold Pustylnik was a very intellectual person, and a good father.
He was born in pre-WWII Odessa, USSR, in 1938.
During difficult years of war he and his mom were evacuated to the Caspian Sea area.
They had to move to new destinations every couple months to escape from Nazis.
After the war their returned to hometown to find out they had no place to live.
However, life went on. Izold finished high school in 1954 with silver medal.
In 1960 he graduated cum laude from Odessa University as an astronomer.
In 1962 Izold started working at Tyravere Observatory, where he had been working till his last day.
He had more than 200 scientific publications in astrophysics and astronomy.
Please visit his homepage: http://www.aai.ee/~izold/index1.html

Dear all, photos from this album can be copied, published and re/used, but only with reference to author and IzoldPustylnik

IN MEMORIAM
IZOLD PUSTYLNIK И.Б.Пустыльник, Изольд Бенционович Пустыльник (17 March 1938 – 2 May 2008)
Izold Pustylnik, eminent astronomer and senior
research associate at the Tartu Observatory,
died on the early morning of May 2, 2008.
Izold Pustylnik was born on March 17, 1938
in the family of millers in Odessa, Ukraine.
There he graduated from the secondary school
with high grades and cum laude from Odessa
University. In 1962 he applied for a postgraduate
position at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy,
Academy of Sciences of the then Estonian
Soviet Socialist Republic. Remarkably, only
three months after starting his postgraduate
studies, Pustylnik delivered his first academic
seminar paper at the institute in the Estonian
language. His skills in acquiring new languages
were impressive: in the institute’s personnel records from 1992 Pustylnik has
rated his command of Russian, Estonian, English and Polish as excellent, and
Ukrainian, German and French as languages he could read and translate, and
Hungarian as the language he commanded at conversational level.
After his post-graduation studies, Pustylnik defended Candidate of Science
degree at the University of Tartu in 1958 and DSC at St Petersburg State University
in 1994.
During the entire time he worked at the Tartu Observatory, Pustylnik researched
close binary systems, because these stars, orbiting very close to each
other around a common centre of mass, help us learn more about stars than
can be done by studying single stars. He even defined a new stellar category –
gas-eclipsed close binaries, which are binaries orbiting around each other in
the common gas envelope. Though mainly a theoretician, Pustylnik was actively
and over a long period in his earlier academic career also involved in
observing binary systems.
In recent years Pustylnik took interest in famous astronomers and has
published, together with Vitalii Bronshten, a monograph on Ernst Julius Öpik,
one of the leading Estonian astronomers. Pustylnik also wrote about Stanislavs
Vasilevskii, the Latvian astronomer whose talent remained hidden in the tumult
of the 20th century, and investigated thoroughly the life and work of
http://www.folklore.ee/folklore/vol40/inmemoriam.pdf
148 www.folklore.ee/folklore
In memoriam
Erich Schoenberg, the Estonian astronomer who worked at the Tartu Old Observatory.
Pustylnik’s interests were not limited to the life and work of famous astronomers;
he also attempted to draw parallels between the views of ancient
astronomers and contemporary thought. At the 2002 Tallinn conference celebrating
the passing of 150 years from the measuring of long meridian arc
from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea, which is now known as the Struve
Geodetic Arc and which is included into the UNESCO World Heritage List,
Izold Pustylnik analysed Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve’s geodetic and astronomical
measuring in the light of contemporary astronomical understanding.
In the mid-1970s, during the surge of national awakening in Estonia, astronomer
Heino Eelsalu began to trace Estonian national identity, almost lost
by then, and focused on the interpretation of various myths and archaeological
objects from astronomical viewpoint, laying thus a solid foundation for the
field of archaeoastronomy in Estonia. For many younger colleagues this opened
a new window to the world, and Eelsalu’s enthusiasm fired many, Pustylnik
among others. He was an active member of SEAC (European Society for Astronomy
in Culture) over many years, and had established contacts with scholars
of archaeoastronomy and ethnoastronomy in the entire Europe. He became
one of the main organisers of the 2002 International Conference of SEAC,
which was held in Tartu, Estonia. At the conference he also delivered a weighty
paper ‘Does modern astrophysics widen the horizons of archaeoastronomy?’
(published in SEAC Proceedings, 2002).
Pustylnik’s fine language skills allowed him to cooperate with astronomers
of many countries of the world. His active lifestyle made him noticed and elected
in the boards of international organisations. For instance, Pustylnik was the
member of the Euro-Asian Astronomical Society virtually since the establishment
of the society.
Pustylnik was also one of the main instigators of Euroscience Estonia. By a
cruel irony, Pustylnik was gone by the opening of the 2008 international seminar
which he had summoned. The seminar was dedicated to the astronomer
Ernst Christoph Friedrich Knorre who worked in Tartu before Struve’s era.
Izold Pustylnik will be deeply missed by the people of the Tartu Observatory.
He was a fine colleague and interlocutor on scientific issues and life in
general.
Tõnu Viik

Lens Fungus : In hunt to get inexpensive sharp telephoto prime lens, I bought Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO for $255 from ebayer with 100% positive feedback.
Lens arrived well packaged, perfect looking externally. Main optical element clean. I made couple test shots that seemed slightly soft.

When I looked inside - what a bad surprise. Looks like a dens web.

Here are images that I made using Tamron 90mm f/2.8 1:1 macro.

I already contacted seller, notifying about problem. But don't know yet what he will answer me after seeing the images.
I was reading on web about Lens Fungus and found one poster mentioning that lenses are most affected if stored in leather cases. Mold is also fungus, by the way.

This lens came in nice black leather case.

Fungus is feeding on organic matter (dead wood, dry bread, other carbohydrates). I don't believe that lens byitself is good food, but if leather case is contaminated - spores will get inside of lens and will try to grow - web like.

On one of my images, if looked at "Original" multiple grain-like spores are visible with sprouts starting from them.

Bottom line:
Don't use leather cases for lens storage. Don't keep any food in same bag/backpack, even in different section of same bag.

Minolta 650si and 100-300mm xi AF lens parts : Following photos were born after recalling me being kid and taking dad's radio apart while he was at work...

I remember how much I was thrilled by process of disassembly, and seeing so many little bolts, washers, clips.

Unfortunately, when I assembled radio back, couple bolts remained extra...
Dad wasn't pleased of course, because his radio stopped working.

Now I'm a father, I thought that disassembling one of faulty lenses from my collection would be great project for my 5 years old son David.

He was thrilled... We had good time, and I explained him as much as I could. After we were done with disassembly, I made some photos of lens parts.

Please tell me what photos you like most.

Mosquito larvae high resolution photos made with Tamron 90mm f/2.8 1:1 lens. Nile virus carriers. Mosquito eggs in clusters seen on water surface. : Mosquito larvae have a well-developed head with mouth brushes used for feeding, a large thorax with no legs and a segmented abdomen.

Larvae breathe through spiracles located on the eighth abdominal segment, or through a siphon, and therefore must come to the surface frequently. The larvae spend most of their time feeding on algae, bacteria, and other micro-organisms in the surface microlayer. They dive below the surface only when disturbed. Larvae swim either through propulsion with the mouth brushes, or by jerky movements of the entire body, giving them the common name of "wigglers" or "wrigglers".

Larvae develop through four stages, or instars, after which they metamorphose into pupae. At the end of each instar, the larvae molt, shedding their exoskeleton, or skin, to allow for further growth.

Pupa
The pupa is comma-shaped, as in Anopheles when viewed from the side, and is commonly called a "tumbler". The head and thorax are merged into a cephalothorax with the abdomen curving around underneath. As with the larvae, pupae must come to the surface frequently to breathe, which they do through a pair of respiratory trumpets on the cephalothorax. However, pupae do not feed during this stage. After a few days, the pupa rises to the water surface, the dorsal surface of the cephalothorax splits and the adult mosquito emerges.
